Mass grave unearthed in East Timor

Radio Australia March 5, 2010 Mass grave unearthed in East Timor - Construction workers at a new luxury hotel and golf course in East Timor have turned up a mass grave.

The construction site is one of many now around the capital Dili as East Timor works to build a tourism industry.

But the discovery is an unpleasant reminder of the nation's history under Indonesian occupation.

Pat Walsh helped establish East Timor's Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation.

He says it's likely more grave sites will be found, but uncovering East Timor's past will help build a peaceful future.

"We know from the International Red Cross between 2 and 3 thousand families are looking for missing or disappeared. That will contribute to community development and peace here, I'm sure. People remain deeply upset about these issues."
