Autopsy for violence victim complete; family demands Police Commissioner be sacked

East Timor Legal News 19 July 2012 Radio Timor-Leste, July 18, 2012 - The National Criminal investigation (SIC) Commander Superintendent Calisto Gonzaga has reported that the process of autopsy on the body of the late Armindo Pereira Alves has been completed the results of the autopsy for investigation purposes were yet to be known.

The commander made the comments during a press conference which was held at the National Police headquarters on Tuesday (18/7), in Dili.

Mr. Conzaga said the young man was killed on Monday but the events leading to this death or the cause of his death were not yet known.

After the autopsy at the National Hospital of Guido Valadares (HNGV), the dead body was handed back to the family for funeral.

Meanwhile, Radio Televizaun de Timor-Leste July 18, 2012 reported that the family of the Mr Alves has called on the National police (PNTL) to be responsible for shooting dead their beloved one in Hera in the eastern part of Dili .

Mrs. Bilesa, the late Alves’ aunt and Abel Ximenes, hsi brother, said the police were responsible for the death and they should be processed legally in the court.

“We want PNTL to be responsible for the case because the police shot our loved one,” he said.

Abel Ximenes, the deceased man's brother called on the government to be responsible for the death of his younger brother.

According to Timor Post (18 July 2012), the police have not yet identified the person who shot Mr Alves. The National Criminal Investigation (SIC) Commander, Calisto Gonzaga said it was too early to name the suspect who shot him and that the case had to go through the proper legal channels.

“We have begun the initial process because the public Prosecution has requested an autopsy to be performed,” he said.

Commander Gonzaga said this was a serious case; therefore investigation into the case should be accelerated.

The family of the victim Armindo Pereira Alves and FRETILIN followers wanted the government to sack commander ­ general of Timorese National Police, Commissioner Longuinhos Monteiro and Dili District Police Commander, Pedro Belo from the National Police.

“We the victim’s family and FRETILIN’s followers from the 13 districts want the government to sack PNTL’s Commander Longuinhos Monteiro and Pedro Belo because they are not professional,” Abel Xmenes said

Abel Ximenes, a family member of the victim added that, if their demand was not responded to by the government, they would fight for justice.

Mr. Ximenes made the comments during a press conference at National Hospital, Guido Valadares after receiving his younger brother's dead body.
