I agree its probably better for the developing economies to keep their common-language countries in their international network. Let's hope that that sort of policy will also contribute to alleviation of poverty and sufferings of our friends in Timor-Leste.Anonymoushttp://easttimorlegal.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4441593467864724337.post-8729901683851627202013-02-14T12:34:55.963+11:002013-02-14T12:34:55.963+11:00I disagree, China for example has invested million...I disagree, China for example has invested millions in portuguese language revival in Macau, as well as university courses on the mainland and the creation in Macau of a 200 billion dollar fund for trade between China and portuguese speaking countries (including Timor). India is now starting to take similar steps towards Goa, and in a smaller scale there is now portuguese education in Malaca for the Kristang community. Don't forget that Brazil, Angola and Moçambique are booming, and just like Timor are resource rich countries. Portugal while in financial crisis is a strategically central Atlantic country with a lot of shipping and the biggest marine resources and marine potential of Europe. Portugal was for many years the only voice for support and pollitical pressure for Timor independence, and the Timorese haven't forgotten it. Timor Leste's leaders are smart, they are betting on a multi-layered foreign policy that will pay off in the long run, altough slow in start.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
