Government finally acts against dissident CPD-RDTL's illegal occupation of land and orders police arrests and forced returns

ETLJB 07 February 2013 - After months of equivocation, threats and intimidation, the State has finally acted against the dissident political group known by its acronym CPD-RDTL.

Following a resolution by the Government, through the Council of Ministers, that the occupation of community land in Fatuberliu was illegal, the police have "taken the necessary action" and arrested members of CPD-RDTL.

According to an English translation of a report by Televizaun Timor-Leste on 5 March, the police issued a statement through Commissioner Longuinhos Monteiro justifying the police intervention after the Coordinator of CPD-RDTL, Antonio Aitahan Matak, made allegations that the police had arrested his members without providing them with food.

Daily newspaper Suara Timor Lorosae reported on the same day that the Government had ordered the police to send the CPD-RDTL members back to their home districts.

Commissioner Monteiro said during a press conference at Police Headquarters in Caicoli in Dili on Monday, 4 March 2013, that "PNTL is ready to prepare for CPD-RDTL members in Welaluhu, Fatuberliu in Same to pick them up and take them back to their respective districts. The police have also hold a dialogue with Communities in Welaluhu, therefore, they know the police's objective in Welaluhu," Longuinhos said.

He added  the Government had given an order to police to control the situation in Welaluhu and said they would not use force to control CPD-RDTL members but if there were physical attacks against them, PNTL and Timorese Defence Force (F-FDTL) would take necessary action according to the existing law in the country.
