Dili Weekly 29 May 2012 07:34 PM PDT - With a spike in cases of sexual violence against women in Timor-Leste, some resulting in death and with suspects still roaming free while women are victimised, the Vulnerable Persons Unit (VPU) of the Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL) force remain ineffective due to lack of resources.
"We must provide facilities to the VPU so they can do their job better and can conduct thorough investigations so that suspects cannot just roam free. I am very disappointed with the rates of sexual violence against women, some die, this is not a good indicator," said the President of the Parliamentary Women's Group (GMPTL), MP Josefa Alvares Soares recently (11/05) at the National Parliament, Dili.
