Threats of Riots Leave Timor Leste Citizens in Unrest

Friday, 30 March, 2012 | 19:14 WIB - TEMPO Interactive, Dili:The Timor Leste Securty Council on Thursday summoned Fransisco Lu-Olo Guterres and Taur Matan Ruak to the presidential palace, Aitarak Laran. Guterres and Matan are the candidates in Timor Leste presidential elections for the period of 2012 to 2017.

The summoning was conducted in response to the complaints made by citizens about the threats coming from supporters of both candidates. The supporters have threatened to create riots if their candidate does not win in the second round of elections to he held on Apr. 16. Timor Leste Preident Jose Ramos Horta said that he received many text messages from concerned citizens complaining about the riot threats. However, Horta explained that the complaints received via text messaging have been declining.
