Portuguese Republican National Guard to stay on in Timor-Leste

ETLJB 06 November 2012 - The Portuguese Republican National Guard (GNR) will maintain a presence in Timor-Leste after the United Nations mission terminates at the end of December this year.

Diario Nacional reported yesterday that an agreement had been signed between the governments of East Timor and Portugal under which the GNR will remain in the country to support the capacity building of the national police.

The Prime Minister, Xanana Gusmao, is reported to have said that “GNR has provided good training for our police therefore we have appealed to them to maintain their mission in the country to help our police in the area of professionalism."
