East Timor says Australia can help improve justice system

ABC News 11 Feb 2009 East Timor says Australia has an important role to play in improving the country's justice system.

East Timor's Foreign minister, Zacarias da Costa, has been in Canberra for talks with his Australian and Portuguese counterparts.

Both countries are key donors to East Timor, and Australia is now reviewing its assistance.

Mr da Costa says while East Timor is becoming more self-reliant, Australian help can still make an important difference.

"Justice sector is an area where Australia can continue to support, and it can make a lot of difference for the country," he said.

"But we also have, for example, to look at the needs of youth, the capacity development of our institutions, of our civil servants."
