East Timor: Voter registration campaign scheduled for February-March

UNMIT Weekly Issue No. 74 of 26 January 2009 Voter registration campaign scheduled for February-March - New eligible voters along with voters who need to replace their registration cards are required to register between February and March for the coming Suco elections (see timetable below). The National Commission on Elections (CNE) has now approved the 2009 Voter Registration Update Campaign calendar, as drafted by the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) with the support of the United Nations Electoral Support Team (UNEST).

The main objective of the campaign is to offer new eligible voters (citizens who just reached 16 years of age) the possibility to register. The campaign also will replace the old registration cards of voters who have not yet completed this process. It is important to remember that voters whose names are not in the voters roll will not be able to vote.

The electoral process is organized in accordance with the provisions of Article 65.2 of the National Constitution. In order to support the process, the voter registration update campaign will include leaflets, TV and radio spots and newspaper ads produced with the active support of UNMIT’s Public Information Office. The campaign will also feature an exhibition on the challenges of the coming Suco electoral process.
