Convicted Dili District administrator appeals against jail time

East Timor Legal News 23/08/2011 Source: Independente 23  August  2011 - Dili District Administrator Ruben Joao Braz wants to pay US$21,800 to the court instead of going to jail for corruption, his lawyer Manuel Soares said.

On August 6, the Dili District Court sentenced Braz to three and a half years in prison after the Public Prosecution accused him of using US $21, 800 in public funds for his own private interests in 2001.

Braz disagrees with the court's decision and has submitted an appeal to the Court of Appeals.

Soares said his client would pay back the UD $ 21, 800, but did not want to go to jail.:

Why is it taht the Dili district Administrator Ruben Braz must go to jail for something that happened in 2001? Does anyone remember what was the situation of the country in 2001? TL didi not have a government at the time nor it have a proper administralion as the whole country was run by the UNTAET. How can they acuse Braz of corruption when the most of the UN staff at the DIli district administration specially in the lands and property department were corrupt? In 2001 Dili district was under the administration of UNTAET so what about the UNTAET advisers of the time? Where were they and why did they not take action at that time?
