Civilians have no rights to carry guns Suara Timor Lorosae, August 4, 2011 language source: Tetun - It is outlined in the RDTL constitution that civilians are not allowed to carry guns and only the defence and security officials are allowed to carry gun, says MP Aderito Hugo da Costa.

MP from the National Congress for the Timorese Reconstruction said that F-FDTL should wait for information from the Timorese National Police (PNTL) about how they can cooperate to hold operations to recall illegal guns.

"The joint operations held by F-FDTL and PNTL after the attempted assassination of President Jose Ramos Horta on February 11, 2008 was good. Their collaboration was good as they asked residents to inform them if they find some people carrying guns illegally and to hand over the guns voluntarily," MP da Costa said. He also called on the national police to cooperate with F-FDTL to hold operations soon in order to recall illegal guns which are believed to be still  in the community.

F-FDTL is waiting for PNTL's plan to hold operations to recall illegal guns Suara Timor Lorosa'e, August 3, 2011 language source: Tetun - The Timorese Defence Force (F-FDTL) is ready to hold operations for recalling illegal guns, but they are still waiting for a plan from the Timorese National Police (PNTL) on how to hold the operations, says Major General Taur Matan Ruak.

The General Commander of F-FDTL added that the operational plan is now in the discussion process.

"F-FDTL has no plan, because we are waiting for the plan from PNTL," General Ruak said. Ruak also said their side only provides support to PNTL in searching and recalling illegal guns if undesirable things happen during the operations. It important for all the people not to accuse people and ex-guerilla fighters of carrying illegal guns as there is no evidence to prove it.
