Court tries police officer for domestic violence offences

East Timor Legal News 30/07/2011 Source: Radio Timor-Leste language source: Tetun - The Dili District Court has tried one of the Timorese National Police (PNTL) officers for his involvement in maltreating his wife and abandoning the family.

The police officer assaulted his spouse because she was suspected of having affair with another man. Speaking to journalists, Prosecutor Remizia de Fatima affirmed that the suspect assaulted his wife by smashing her head to the car, beating and burning her body with cigarette.

In relation to such behavior of the suspect, the Public Prosecution urged the court to make a fair and balanced verdict for the suspect. Legal advisor for the suspect called on the judges to hand downa  provisional sentence for his clients as it is not a maltreatment case.

Why is domestic violence such a problem in East Timor? Is it a legacy of the violent past? Or a manifestation of the repression of women?
