3,500 Portuguese request extradition of Portuguese couple convicted of embezzlement in Timor-Leste

WARNING MACHINE TRANSLATION OF ORIGINAL PORTUGUESE TEXT Jornal de Noticias Portugal - Almost 3,500 people signed a petition that has already reached the Portuguese parliament asking the government to extradite the Portuguese couple Tiago and Fong Fong Guerra to Portugal, sentenced to eight years' imprisonment in Timor-Leste for embezzlement.

The couple, convicted last August, appealed against the sentence, considering that it "suffers from insanitary nullities" more common in "undemocratic regimes", based on manipulated evidence and even prohibited.

The petition, with more than 3,450 signatures, claims that "the Government of Portugal would urge the Government of Timor-Leste to have this case transferred to Portugal, since the Timorese judicial system has proven incapable of dealing with a case like this ".

"All the human rights of these Portuguese citizens have been violated in Timor-Leste, where they have been separated for three years, separated from the [two] minor children," said the petition, which is being presented today by the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees of the Portuguese parliament.
