Lusa Oct 2008 East Timor: Arms and ammunition are destroyed this week - Nearly ten thousand illegal weapons and ammunition will be destroyed next Friday at three different locations, the prime minister of East Timor, Xanana Gusmão announced yesterday .
The Head of Government announced the destruction of weapons and ammunition in a a press conference Monday in Dili, convened for that purpose, the agency Lusa was told today the official source of the office of Xanana Gusmao.
Weapons and ammunition were delivered during the campaign that ran from 15 July and August 31 across the country and that allowed the East Timorese to turn in illegal weapons without facing prosecution.
The nearly ten thousand, mostly from manufacturing devices or traditional homemade, like darts and arrows, will be destroyed in three simultaneous ceremonies in Baucau (east), Aileu (center) and Ermera (west).
The ceremonies will be open to the press and public.
Hours before the destruction of weapons, ammunition collected in the campaign of July and August will be destroyed in a closed ceremony (but open to press) at the Center of Instruction Metinaro of Falintil - Forces for Defense Timor-Leste (F-FDTL), east of Dili.
At a press conference on Monday, attended the Secretary of State for Security, Francisco Guterres, the head of General Staff headquarters of the F-FDTL, Brigadier General Taur Matan Ruak, and interim commander of the National Police, Inspector Afonso de Jesus.
The Lusa was not convened for that press conference.

Timor-Leste: Armas e munições são destruídas esta semana
Quase dez mil armas ilegais e munições vão ser destruídas na próxima sexta-feira em três locais diferentes, anunciou ontem o primeiro-ministro de Timor-Leste, Xanana Gusmão.
O chefe de Governo anunciou a destruição das armas e munições numa conferência de imprensa, segunda-feira, em Díli, convocada para o efeito, segundo afirmou hoje à Agência Lusa fonte oficial do gabinete de Xanana Gusmão.
Trata-de armas e munições entregues durante a campanha que decorreu entre 15 de Julho e 31 de Agosto em todo o país e que possibilitou aos timorenses desfazer-se de armas ilegais sem enfrentarem procedimento criminal.
As quase dez mil armas, na sua maior parte engenhos de fabrico caseiro ou tradicionais, como dardos e flechas, serão destruídas em três cerimónias simultâneas, em Baucau (leste), Aileu (centro) e Ermera (oeste).
As cerimónias serão abertas à imprensa e ao público.
Horas antes da destruição das armas, as munições recolhidas na campanha de Julho e Agosto serão destruídas numa cerimónia fechada (mas aberta imprensa) no Centro de Instrução de Metinaro das Falintil - Forças de Defesa de Timor-Leste (F-FDTL), a leste de Díli.
Na conferência de imprensa de segunda-feira, estiveram presentes o secretário de Estado da Segurança, Francisco Guterres, o chefe do Estado-Maior-general das F-FDTL, Brigadeiro-General Taur Matan Ruak, e o comandante-interino da Polícia Nacional, inspector Afonso de Jesus.
A Lusa não foi convocada para a referida conferência de imprensa.
