Timorese lawyers agree to use Tetum in Court

AATL agrees to use Tetun in the Court Diario Nacional, March 16, 2010 language source: Tetun - Jose Pedro Camoes, the President of the Timorese Lawyers Association (AATL) has said that the use of Portuguese in the courts has impacted on Timorese lawyers and their clients; therefore he said his association has agreed to use Tetun all trial proceedings.

“We do not have to force ourselves to use Portuguese in the court as it will make simple things complicated because international lawyers use Portuguese whereas the Timorese lawyers and their clients use Tetun and other dialects of Timor-Leste,” Mr. Camoes said.

In regard to the recent call of the Timorese Defence Force (F-FDTL) Commander, Major General Taur Matan Ruak to the court to use Tetun, Mr. Camoes has said he supports the call.

Mr. Camoes has also said that the National Parliament should amend the Constitution about official languages.
