National Police officers have not maltreated Kovalima residents

Suara Timor Lorosa'e, March 9, 2010 language source: Tetun - The Timorese Operational Police Commander Inspector Mateus Fernandes has confirmed that the recent allegation made by the Bua Malus group and the ex-resistance organization (CPD-RDTL) followers was a falsehood.

Mr. Fernandes said that the allegation made is a falsehood because the purpose of the national police presence in the Bobonaro and Kovalima Districts is to collaborate with the residents in order to ensure security to the local residents from the recent criminal acts conducted by the ninja gangs in the area.

"The allegation made is falsehood as the police presence in the area is to protect people from criminal acts of the ninja gangs, adding that the police have never detained and maltreated any resident during the operation," Mr. Fernandes said.

The residents made the allegations against the national police when Parliamentary Committee A for Law and Constitutional Affairs delegation visited Bobonaro and Kovalima districts.
