PNTL officers in the Oecusse district engage in human rights violations: Ombudsman Suara Timor Lorosa’e 8 March 2010 language source: Tetun - The Director of the Timorese Human Rights and Justice Ombudsman (PDHJ) for Oecusse District, Valino Magno Ximenes, has conformed that they have received many cases from the residents of Oecusse about human rights violation cases that mostly involved Oecusse District Police officers.
Mr. Ximenes said that the PDHJ held a three-day workshop with the local police in Oecusse district in order to improve their understanding of human rights so that they can minimise their acts of violations against human rights.
“The presentations made during the workshop are about the role of the PDHJ, Human Rights and the CEDAW convention, basic human rights and the procedures for using force,” Mr. Ximenes said.
Meanwhile, Border Police Unit Commander in Oecusse District, Damiao da Conceicao, said that he was proud of the training as it could help to improve their knowledge, particularly about human rights, so that they could manage themselves not to engage in human right violations in maintaining peace and order.
