Charles Darwin University and East Timor cement their intent

CDU and Timor Leste cement their intent 15/12/2008 - Charles Darwin University and Timor Leste have announced the signing of a letter of intent designed to promote mutual understanding and academic, cultural and personnel exchange between the two counties.

CDU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Helen Garnett recently met with the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) of Timor Leste, Mr Mariano Assanami and other members of his department to discuss the development of collaborative arrangements and the development of educational opportunities.

Professor Garnett said CDU had shared a close association with East Timor over the years, and that the letter of intent would further cement pre-existing ties of friendship and cooperation.

“The NT Government and the Australian Government are very supportive of our work in Timor Leste,” Professor Garnett said.

“Much planning has gone into identifying the important areas where we can work together, and we believe something really good can happen out of our collaboration.

“I expect this will be the first of many agreements between the Timor Leste Government and CDU.”

Professor Garnett and Mr Assanami went on to discuss the collaboration on joint grant applications for cooperative research projects and funded educational and professional development opportunities for staff in both parties.
