ABC News 22/12/2008 - The Governor-General, Quentin Bryce, says Australia has made an extraordinary contribution to the rebuilding and security efforts in East Timor.
In her first official visit to the nation, Ms Bryce met Defence and Australian Federal Police personnel.
She said she was proud to be able to thank Australia's service men and women in person.
"The way they respond to the needs of the community there in 2008, the contribution that they've made to increasing security for people," she said.
Meanwhile, Ms Bryce says she wants to spend more time with Indigenous Australians next year.
Reflecting on her three months in the job, Ms Bryce says her goal is to contribute to the community.
"As Governor-General I have a unique opportunity to do that," she said.
"I want to think about spending some more time in Indigenous communities with people in rural and remote Australia."
