UNMIT says East Timor has made progress in 2008

Australian News Network 24 December 2008 - The United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor Leste, UNMIT says it feels good about the progress made by the nation in 2008 and the resilience demonstrated by the Timorese people in a year that started with great challenge.

The UNMIT statement comes amid reports by the Australian newspaper that a confidential UN report states East Timor is at risk of anarchy.

Without confirming nor denying the report, UNMIT's acting head Finn Reske-Nielsen says solid advances have been made in democratic governance and respect for human rights with parliament playing an increasingly active role.

He said that dialogue between the political parties on issues of national importance is robust and constructive with the focus on developing a clear strategic vision for the military and police.

He said the Timorese people can look forward to even greater progress in 2009.
