East Timor President meets with Prosecutor-General on 11 February attack

His Excellency the President of Republic, Dr Jose Ramos-Horta, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, today went to the Head Quarters of the Prosecutor-General of Timor-Leste for a formal meeting with the Prosecutor General and his staff. First The President of The Republic a convey his good wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year for the Prosecutor-General and all his colleagues.

The President of the Republic, asked some international prosecutors from Cabo Verde, a country to which Timor-Leste has a very strong fraternal relation, to carry with them to the President and Prime Minister of Cabo Verde and other friends, some special souvenirs from Timor-Leste, namely our very good organic arabica coffee, as they travel back to their country for the Christmas season.

The Prosecutor-General used this opportunity of the visit of the President of The Republic to inform him about the investigation into the 11 February 2008 incident.

Upon terminating the meeting, the President of The Republic commented to the media as follow,

“In regards to the 11 February 2008 incident, as a witness and a victim, I have always being cooperative with total honesty with the justice sector. I cannot comment on my conversation with the Prosecutor-General”.

“As a Christian and a human being, I feel sorry for them for being imprisoned today, and I understand that they were caught in the complex crisis of 2006, however, as Head of State I must support the justice system and let justice takes its course. Sometimes we might have our own sentiments or perception about a court decision. However, we must always accept the court decision regardless of our feelings,” the President stated. END
