PM Gusmao expel Timorese Foreign Affairs Minister Zacarias Albano da Costa

Suara Timor Lorosa’e, April 13, 2010 language source: Tetun - The State Secretary of the Council Ministers Hermenegildo Pereira has said that Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao has decided to suspend the Timorese Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Minister Zacarias Albano da Costa from his current post.

“Based on the rule, any minister who had lost the confidence from the Government, he/she should be suspended by Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao,” Pereira said.

Pereira said that PM Gusmao decided to dismiss Minister da Costa after he received a short message service (SMS) from Minister da Costa, threatening to resign from his post.

Pereira also said that PM Gusmao also called on Minister da Costa to tender his resignation letter.

PM Gusmao also said that did not want to be threatened by his ministers.
“PM Gusmao has told that Minister da Costa can tender resignation letter and he does not want any minister to threaten him,” Pereira explained.

The State Secretary for the Council of Miters Hermenegildo Pereira has said that Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao has lost his confidence in the Timorese Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Zacarias Albano da Costa, because of the recent short message service (SMS) sent to PM Gusmao.

Pereira made the comment yesterday in a pres conference at the Government Palace.

Pereira added that based on the rules that any minister who has lost its confidence from the Government then Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao has power to suspend him/her.

“Based on the rules that those ministers who lost his confidence from the Government then PM Gusmao has absolute power to suspend him/her from his post,” Pereira said.

Pereira said that Minister da Costa had really sent an SMS to PM Gusmao’s advisor on May 27th at 10:30 threatening to resign from his post.

“I want to talk with PM Gusmao, because they have disallowed me when I absent and therefore there is no alternative except I will tender my resignation,” Pereira explain the SMS of Minister da Costa.

Pereira added, “In April 1st the Minister da Costa sent another SMS and saying it is true that I have written a letter to PM Gusmao and it was urge PM Gusmao to respond my request if PM does not want to talk openly.”

Regarding to this case, Vice President of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) has said that Zacarias Albano da Costa has absolute power to made comment about his current position as a minister.

Meanwhile, MPs from the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in the Parliament had walked out the Parliament when the State Secretary for Council of Ministers Hermenegildo Pereira present the Government’s proposed draft law about state’s protocol for the Parliament.

MP Maria Paixao from PSD has said that they walked out the Parliament when it was about to debate protocol draft law No 34/2010.

Paixao said that walked out due to they dissatisfied with the State Secretary of Council of Minister Hermenegildo Pereira’s present in the Parliament.

“We walk out the Parliament because we dissatisfy with Pereira’s present, moreover Minister da Costa has competence to defend himself in the Parliament,” Paixao said.
