Dili, 13 Apr (PPR) –Timor-Leste’s global diplomatic policy was today reviewed during a meeting held on Monday by the Head of State, Dr. Jose Ramos-Horta, and attended by Timorese Ambassadors and consular representatives at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, Dili.
The meeting took place within the Coordination Council which meets annually in the country to analyse Timor-Leste’s diplomacy.
The President of the Republic spoke about the State’s External Policy, emphasising the International Conventions and Treaties to which Timor-Leste is a signatory.
Dr Ramos-Horta also approached the issue of the integration of Timor-Leste within the region, particularly with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN): the Timorese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Zacarias da Costa, explained the ongoing process towards the preparation for the country to join that organisation.
The Ambassadors and consular representatives were informed by the President of the Republic of a joint initiative, with the Republic of Maldives, in the area of Climate Change, which aims to establish an Asian platform of mutual support to address this global challenge.
Finally, the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate gave the diplomats a panorama of the political situation and of the economic development of Timor-Leste.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Zacarias Albano da Costa, took part in the meeting, together with the Secretary-General of the same Ministry, Dr. Vicky Tchong, the National Director for Political Affairs, Dr. Isidro Coelho, 17 of the 18 Ambassadors of Timor-Leste and three consular representatives.
