Televizaun Timor-Leste, April 12, 2010 language source: Tetun - President Jose Ramos has said that he had planned to give pardon to the ex-Rebel leader Gastão Salsinha and his men in May, next month.
President Horta said that Salsinha and his men were eligible to be pardoned as they were the victim of the 2006 military crisis as well.
“I am waiting for recommendation from the Government and my advisors, but I think they are eligible to be pardoned as their case been tried in the court,” President Horta said.
The president added that decision made to give pardon was not aimed to interven the country’s judicial system, but it was made based on the humanity aspect.
Gastão Salsinha and his men were sentenced by the Dili District Court to be imprisoned 8-16 years, because they had engaged in the attempted assassination case against President Jose Ramos Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao on 11th February 2008.
